Meet Your Horticulturist
Emi Nelson
Founder & Lead Designer, Native Gardens LLC
I am a botanically trained horticulturist who believes the most beautiful gardens are the ones that work with nature, not against it. Every landscape I design is grounded in science — soil chemistry, plant physiology, ecological relationships — and brought to life with an artist's eye.

My Story
I did not come to horticulture by accident. While some landscapers start with a mower and learn as they go, I started with a microscope. My degree in horticulture gave me a deep understanding of how plants actually work — their root systems, their water uptake mechanisms, their relationships with soil microbes, and the ecological webs they are part of.
That scientific foundation changed everything about how I approach landscape design. When I choose a plant for your garden, I am not guessing. I know its moisture needs, its soil pH preference, its cold hardiness, its bloom period, and what pollinators it supports. When I amend your soil, I understand the chemistry behind why certain amendments work in Colorado clay and others do not.
My CSU Certified Colorado Gardener designation deepened that knowledge specifically for our region. Colorado is not like anywhere else — our alkaline soils, intense UV, dramatic temperature swings, and unpredictable moisture mean that plant choices matter enormously. A plant that thrives in Denver may struggle in Fort Collins, and vice versa. I understand those nuances.
The wholesale nursery license was a natural next step. I was tired of seeing clients pay retail prices for mediocre plant stock from big-box stores. By sourcing directly from growers, I can guarantee that every plant in your garden is the right variety, the right size, and in the best possible health. No substitutions, no compromises.
“I believe the most beautiful gardens are the ones where botanical science and artistic design work together. Nature already has the answers — my job is to translate them into a landscape that makes you want to spend every evening outside.”

Design Philosophy
Science First, Always
Every decision starts with the science. Soil type, sun exposure, drainage, microclimates — understanding these fundamentals is what separates a garden that thrives from one that just survives.
Beauty Is the Goal
Sustainability is a means, not an end. The goal is a garden so beautiful that you want to sit in it, photograph it, and share it with friends. The fact that it uses less water and supports wildlife is the bonus.
Designed for Your Life
A garden should fit how you actually live. Do you entertain? Need play space for kids? Want privacy? Crave a morning coffee spot? Your lifestyle shapes the design just as much as the ecology does.
Four-Season Thinking
Colorado has dramatic seasons, and your garden should celebrate every one. Spring ephemeral blooms, summer pollinator festivals, fall color and seed heads, winter structure and snow-catching grasses.
Ecological Integrity
Every garden we create is a mini-ecosystem. Plants are chosen not just for their individual beauty but for how they interact — supporting pollinators, building soil, and creating habitat layers.
Honest Guidance
I will never recommend a plant or service you do not need. If your existing plants are fine, I will tell you. If a project is better done in phases, I will say so. Trust is the foundation of every client relationship.
Why Credentials Matter
Anyone can call themselves a landscaper. There is no licensing requirement, no minimum education, and no guarantee of competence. The result is an industry where many people with good intentions install plants in the wrong places, use inappropriate amendments, and create landscapes that look great for one season and decline from there.
My credentials are not decorations — they represent hundreds of hours of formal education in plant science, soil science, entomology, plant pathology, and landscape design. When you work with me, you are getting the benefit of that knowledge applied to every square foot of your property.
The wholesale nursery license goes beyond credentials — it is a practical advantage. I source plants directly from specialty growers who propagate locally adapted varieties. This means your garden gets stronger, healthier plants at better prices than retail. More importantly, it means I have complete control over plant quality and variety selection.
